Several studies believe methane produced by cattle is the principal cause of climate change. They are convinced that methane generated by cows’ digestion has a more important effect on this environmental issue than we think of.

Scientists from the Welsh Environmental Institute propose to change the cattle’s diet because they assume it causes a quarter of the methane emissions produced by human activities. They propose introducing plants such as the white clover with a higher level of sugar into the cows’ main diet. In this way, the process by which the cows’ stomach transforms food into methane that gets off mostly through their mouths will eventually be modified.

Methane catches twenty times more heat than carbon dioxide considered the main gas provoking greenhouse effect. However, the Kyoto Protocol gave methane more flexible limits because during the 90s it showed relatively constant levels.

Some researchers believe methane is even more dangerous than carbon dioxide. They remember that this gas was already responsible of global warming 180 million years ago. It caused a big disaster that killed a lot of species. According to these scientists, this phenomenon originated because of small undulations in the earth’s orbit that periodically approach it to the sun. During that time, oceans got warmer unfreezing huge amounts of methane captured into the deep sea and throwing them away into the atmosphere.
